The Essential Difference
The following is the essential difference between an Illusionist and an Ironist. The skill of an Illusionist lies in deceiving the eye. The art of an Ironist lies in disorienting the mind.

Quite true. Sometimes the 'mind' can also invent what it wants the 'eye' to see. In this sense, all seeing is seeing-as.

There is another way of expressing your point about how difficult it is to separate the 'eye' from the 'mind'. When we look at the world, what we see is actually the product of a complex ('dialectical') interaction between 'what is out there' and 'what we expect to find there'.Consider, for example, a sunset at sea that is being witnessed by a Muslim and an atheist. To the extent that both of them have the same physiological structures and the same set of optical nerves, both the Muslim and the atheist see,in one sense, the same event. In another sense, however, they do see quite different 'things' : the Muslim sees a sign of the majesty of God, and the atheist (possibly)sees a indicator of the futility of existence.
